Backstory
Let there be no mistake. Chivalry is nigh on dead in Anglosea. Gunpowder has more or less made it obsolete, and the knights of old are but legends. Most people hold no sway to such talk, save from the occasional influence and reports of magic still abound.
But Lawrence is different. From a very early age, his father read him bedtime stories from a book called the Countchester Tales, a book about knights and chivalrous people. That had a huge effect on the young boy (he charged around their small garden with the table cloth over his shoulders etc). It also caused him trouble, and his slightly eccentric nature ensured that most people regarded him with suspicion.
Lawrence found Lars in an egg beside the sea, and took him home to be raised, naming him after his own father who read him the stories. After Lars got too big, Lawrence released him to the local saltwater caves.
Not a moment too soon.
In what seemed like no time, plague struck his hometown and the local lord declared a full quarantine. Lawrence was devastated, but more so when his father was struck down. After the death of his father, Lawrence swore to find a cure before it spread further, took his dads old armour and spear, and tore down to the caves to find his old friend.
Winding their way to the open ocean, the two made a quiet pact to do their best to find a cure, or die trying. Even if that means travelling to the end of the world (...which is similar in size to a flattened Jupiter
)!
Many things matter to Lawrence. If, on his seaborne travels with his large friend, they come across a small island threatened by a tribal chief, Lawrence will see it as his duty as a 'knight' to defend the villagers, regardless if they want to eat him. He might seem ridiculously silly whilst doing so, but his heart is in the right place, even if his head isnt.
Despite his apparant goofyness, Lawrence sometimes comes across as arrogant, even stupidly so. Thats not really his fault. Besides, not so deep down he has a caring heart. His parents and would-be girlfriend mattered very much to him. But of course, the former are dead by now, and the latter vanished without a trace
Lawrence shares Larss fear of the dark and furthermore of death and pain, which makes it both hard and dangerous to go too deep.
Still, theres a lot of light comedy on his voyage. Often it comes down to simple bickering between the two of them, perhaps with the human bribing his serpent buddy to travel through wind, fire and snow with the biggest kelp beds known to sentient beings.
Lawrences weapons and leather armour are fairly ordinary. Both were used by his dad, in his days as an auxiliary light lancer for the local lords castle. Then again, the local spirit gave them pressure resistance and breathability properties early on his quest. Apart from that though, just ordinary armour; it wont save him from an arquebus attack.
Mostly that spear of his is simply for show, or for spearing a passing meal. His cookery skills he learnt helping out at home allow him to practically eat anything, and small fires can usually be started by Lars breath. The rare use of his spear doesnt mean he isnt powerful though. But being a chivalrous man, Lawrence will rarely if ever kill enemies, unless they insist on attacking him.
Lawrence will often stop at a town on their way to tend to his armour or buy supplies. Sometimes hell met warriors, witches, wyverns
who knows?
Maybe thats the fun of it.

Raised from an egg by Lawrence, and named after his now-deceased father. Compared to Lawrences (attempted) strong, heroic stance, Lars is the lighter of the two. Ironic considering he weighs in at over five metric tonnes.
Lars is quiet different from the stereotype that most humans have of his race since the Fall. The majority of sea serpents arent ferocious at all; certainly less so than the proud, war-like dragons of the air. In fact, there are two main subspecies of serpents in the oceans of Panthlassa today (though youd most likely never see even one); Kelp and Great. Both are direct descendants of the Great Spirit of the Waters.
Kelp serpents, even as the most common serpent, are exceedingly rare. One or two may be seen per human generation. They grow to be about eighty metres long and, as the name suggests, feed almost exclusively on the VAST kelp forests of the shallow seas. Their jaws are multi-purpose, but their front teeth have been flattened to allow them to scoop up the nutrient-rich plants and their stomachs contain large flattened stones to help them grind down the material.
Lars gives the stones to his friends.
Though they can venture down into the dark depths of the ocean, they prefer not to, simply because down there lurk their great cousins (and Lars himself is just generally scared of the dark)
Great serpents are far larger. Much rarer than their smaller cousins, if one the memory of the sighting itself will be passed down the observers family until judgment day. Growing to over five hundred metres long and weighing over two hundred tonnes, Great serpents rarely if ever come to the surface, perhaps because, due to their extreme longevity, the memory of the Ashen Wars is painful to them. Great serpents are the most powerful creatures on the planet.
Lars, at just over a year old, is still young and very small even by the standards of his kelp-eating kind. Perhaps because hes still very young, hes also something of a practical joker, and plays endless light-hearted pranks on his human friend, though is hilariously gullible himself.
That is unless you insult how or what he eats, in which case RUN.
Then again, Lars is brave to a fault. If his friend or any of his scattered kind is threatened, he will charge into battle like a tsunami. Lars can fight very well, and with Lawrence is a force to be reckoned with. His muscular body can be used to constrict opponents, though his most powerful weapon is his jaw, obviously. His teeth, whilst not of dragon standard, are still very sharp.
But there is another, more devastating ability still. Serpents of all types store energy from fish or plant matter as a soluble fat around their bodies, to insulate them from the cold seas and to give themselves a backup food supply. They can store huge amounts of far, which, at an opportune moment, they can vomit up. Using scales imbedded in the back of their necks, they can generate enough friction to ignite this as it leaves their mouth, billowing out as balls of flame. Thankfully, the epithelial cells around their mouths have become hardened to protect against damage. Still, using a breath beam in the old style costs huge amounts and is only a last resort against powerful foes.
Mostly however, Lars prefers to hide from danger, remaining hidden among rocks or seaweed. Hes too brittle to challenge battleships openly, but could ram and destroy them from under the water.
The relationship between Lawrence and Lars is complex. Occasionally, Lawrence will start shouting, causing Lars to get upset or make faces. But generally, they are blood brothers, and each others best friend.
And yet theres a nagging loneliness in the serpent, something that even the angels he knows cannot fill
